Psalms 88:14

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?”

Psalm 88:14 (KJV) says: “Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?”

Historical Context:Psalm 88 is attributed to Heman the Ezrahite, and it is known as a psalm of lament or a psalm of deep sorrow. The psalmist expresses his anguish, desperation, and feelings of abandonment to God. It is essential to understand the psalmist’s emotional state and circumstances to grasp the meaning behind Psalm 88:14.

Psalm 88:14 captures the psalmist’s cry to God, questioning why He seems distant and has turned away from him. The psalmist feels abandoned, as if God has rejected or cast him off. The phrase “why hidest thou thy face from me?” signifies the psalmist’s perception that God is not providing comfort, guidance, or favor.

Spiritual Significance and Application:

  • Honesty before God:One significant aspect of Psalm 88:14 is its raw honesty before God. The psalmist openly shares his distress and confusion, not shying away from expressing his deep emotions. This teaches us that we can approach God with our struggles, doubts, and questions, knowing that He welcomes our honesty.
  • Trusting God in darkness:The psalmist’s plea to God, despite feeling abandoned, reveals an underlying trust and faith in the midst of despair. The psalmist may not understand why God seems distant, but he still turns to Him, acknowledging His sovereignty and seeking His presence. We can learn from this example and cling to God even when we don’t perceive His immediate presence or understand His ways.
  • Lament and hope:While Psalm 88 is a lamentation, it is crucial to note that it is part of the larger book of Psalms, which is filled with expressions of praise, worship, and hope. Though Psalm 88 ends on a note of despair, it encourages us to persevere in prayer and trust that God hears our cries, even when our circumstances seem bleak. As believers, we can find hope and assurance in God’s promises, even in the midst of our darkest moments.

When we encounter seasons of spiritual dryness, emotional distress, or a sense of God’s absence, we can relate to the psalmist’s cry in Psalm 88:14. In these times, we can:

  • – Be honest with God: Pour out our hearts to God, sharing our struggles, doubts, and questions, knowing that He understands and cares for us.
  • – Seek God’s face: Even when God feels distant, we can intentionally seek His presence through prayer, worship, and the study of His Word.
  • – Maintain faith and trust: Though circumstances may be challenging, we can hold onto our faith, trusting that God is still with us, even if we cannot perceive His immediate response.
  • – Look for hope: Even in the midst of our lamentations, we can find hope in God’s character, His promises, and the assurance that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Remember, each psalm has a unique context and purpose, and exploring the surrounding verses and the psalm as a whole can provide a deeper understanding of the psalmist’s message.
