Psalms 88:8

“Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.”

Psalm 88 is one of the many Psalms attributed to the psalmist Heman the Ezrahite: It is regarded as one of the most sorrowful and despairing Psalms in the entire book. The psalmist expresses deep anguish and laments his desperate condition before God.

In verse 8, the psalmist speaks of his isolation and alienation. Let’s explore its meaning and the themes it presents:

Isolation and Abandonment: The psalmist declares that God has put his acquaintances far from him. This refers to the feeling of being deserted or forsaken by friends and loved ones. The psalmist experiences a sense of isolation, both from human companionship and from God’s comforting presence. This verse underscores the pain of feeling abandoned and rejected.

The Experience of Being an Abomination: The psalmist goes further to state that he has become an abomination to those around him. This could indicate that the psalmist’s affliction, suffering, or perhaps his perceived guilt, has caused others to shun him. It reflects the psalmist’s perception of being despised or regarded with disgust by those who were once close to him.

Confinement and Inability to Escape: The psalmist adds that he is shut up and unable to come forth. This suggests a feeling of being trapped or confined, possibly referring to his affliction, circumstances, or even a sense of spiritual darkness. The psalmist may feel trapped in his suffering, unable to escape or find relief.

Overall, Psalm 88:8 captures the psalmist’s deep distress and feelings of abandonment, rejection, and confinement. It reflects the psalmist’s desperate cry to God in the midst of his anguish, seeking comfort, deliverance, and restoration.

While this verse portrays a moment of despair, it is essential to note that the Psalms often explore the depths of human emotions and experiences. The Psalmist’s cry serves as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can turn to God, pour out our hearts before Him, and find solace and hope in His unfailing love and faithfulness.
