“For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.”

Psalm 89:18 (KJV) says: For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

This verse is part of a psalm attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite, praising God for His faithfulness and covenant with David and his descendants. In this specific verse, the psalmist acknowledges God as their defender and acknowledges the Holy One of Israel as their king.

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, we can explore its context within the psalm and examine its significance in relation to the overall themes and teachings of the Bible.

Context:

Psalm 89 is a contemplation on God’s covenant with David, emphasizing God’s faithfulness and His enduring promises. The psalm begins by praising the Lord’s faithfulness and love, recounting His covenant with David, and exalting God’s greatness and power.

The LORD is our defense:The psalmist acknowledges that God is their defense. This phrase implies that God provides protection, refuge, and security for His people. It speaks of God’s role as a shield and fortress, guarding and preserving His chosen ones. This concept is reiterated throughout the Bible, emphasizing that God is a stronghold and refuge for those who trust in Him (Psalm 18:2, Psalm 46:1).

The Holy One of Israel is our king:The psalmist further declares that the Holy One of Israel is their king. This statement highlights God’s sovereignty and His position as the ruler over His people. In the context of the psalm, it affirms God’s covenant with David, where He promised to establish David’s throne forever (2 Samuel 7:16). It points to Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah and descendant of David, who fulfills this eternal kingship (Luke 1:32-33, Revelation 19:16).

Application and Significance:

Psalm 89:18 reminds believers of God’s role as their protector and the ultimate ruler over their lives. It emphasizes the trustworthiness of God’s promises and His faithfulness to His covenant. As believers, we can find comfort and confidence in knowing that God is our defender and king. We can seek His guidance, take refuge in His presence, and trust in His sovereignty, knowing that He is faithful to His word.

In summary, Psalm 89:18 reflects the psalmist’s acknowledgment of God as the defender of His people and the Holy One of Israel as their king. It highlights God’s faithfulness and His enduring covenant with David, which finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s protection and sovereignty, finding assurance in His promises and recognizing Him as their eternal King.
