But my faithfulnesse and my mercy shalbe with him: and in my name shall his horne be exalted. Psalms 89:24 (KJV)

Psalm 89 is a psalm attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite and reflects on the covenant God made with David, promising to establish his dynasty forever. It opens with a beautiful declaration of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness, emphasizing the enduring nature of the covenant.

In verse 24 the psalmist speaks about the chosen one, the king of Israel who is anointed and appointed by God. The verse highlights two crucial attributes of God—His faithfulness and His mercy. God’s faithfulness ensures that He keeps His promises, while His mercy demonstrates His compassion and kindness toward His people.

The phrase “with him” refers to the king chosen by God, most likely King David in this context. It emphasizes the divine support and presence that will accompany the anointed king throughout his reign. God’s faithfulness and mercy will be continually manifested in his life and rule.

The “horn” is a biblical symbol of strength and power. The wording “in my name shall his horn be exalted” suggests that the king’s authority and influence will be elevated and exalted by God. It indicates that the king’s success and prosperity will come from relying on God’s name and seeking His guidance and wisdom.

Overall, this verse underscores God’s faithfulness, mercy, and empowerment in establishing and uplifting the chosen king. It emphasizes the importance of trusting in God’s promises, relying on His strength, and acknowledging His sovereignty.

As you continue to explore the rest of Psalm 89, you will discover a deeper reflection on God’s covenant with David and the struggles the psalmist faces when it appears that God’s promises have been broken. The later sections (e.g., verses 38‑51) express doubt and lamentation over God’s apparent abandonment of His covenant promises, creating a more complete theological picture. Yet the psalm ultimately expresses hope and trust in God’s enduring faithfulness, despite the challenges faced by the king and the nation of Israel.
