Psalms 89:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant.”

Context:Psalm 89 is attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite and is a contemplation on God’s covenant with David. This psalm expresses praise for God’s faithfulness and explores the promises made to David and his descendants.

The verse begins by highlighting the existence of a covenant. In the Bible, a covenant is a solemn agreement or contract between two parties, often initiated by God. Covenants are significant because they establish a special relationship, outline obligations, and include promises.

God refers to the recipient of the covenant as “my chosen.” This indicates that God selected David to be the recipient of His special favour and blessings. David was chosen to be the king of Israel and played a pivotal role in God’s plan for His people.

God declares that He has made a solemn oath to David. This emphasizes the seriousness and commitment of God to fulfil His promises. God’s oath demonstrates His unchanging nature and His faithfulness in keeping His word.

David is described as God’s servant, signifying his role as a faithful follower of God’s commands. Despite his flaws, David’s heart was inclined towards God, and he sought to honour and obey Him. This title also shows the special relationship David had with God, which resulted in the establishment of the Davidic dynasty.
