Psalms 89:30

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;”

Psalm 89:30 (KJV) says, “If his children forsake my law and walk not in my judgments,”

Context:Psalm 89 is a psalm attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite and is known as a maskil, which means it is a contemplative or instructive psalm. The psalm focuses on God’s covenant with David and His faithfulness to fulfill it.

Covenant with David:The psalmist begins by praising the steadfast love and faithfulness of God, affirming His covenant with David. God promised David an everlasting dynasty, declaring that one of his descendants would sit on the throne forever (2 Samuel 7:12-13). This promise is the foundation of Psalm 89.

God’s response to disobedience:In verse 30, the psalm takes a turn, stating a hypothetical scenario where David’s descendants forsake God’s law and do not walk in His judgments. This verse raises the possibility of unfaithfulness and disobedience on the part of David’s successors.

Consequences of disobedience:Throughout the Bible, God emphasizes the importance of obedience to His law and commands. The psalmist acknowledges that if David’s descendants were to forsake God’s law and ignore His judgments, there would be consequences for their actions. These consequences could include God’s discipline or the withdrawal of His blessings.

God’s enduring faithfulness:Although verse 30 portrays a hypothetical situation, the psalmist continues in subsequent verses to affirm God’s unwavering faithfulness. Despite the potential unfaithfulness of David’s descendants, the psalmist declares that God will not break His covenant, and His steadfast love will not be revoked.

Lessons for believers:Psalm 89:30 serves as a reminder to believers about the importance of remaining faithful to God’s law and judgments. It emphasizes the consequences that can arise from disobedience while highlighting God’s enduring faithfulness even when His people fall short.

Overall, Psalm 89:30 emphasises the significance of obedience to God’s law and warns about the potential consequences of forsaking His commands. It invites believers to remain steadfast and faithful, trusting in God’s enduring love and faithfulness despite their shortcomings.

Please note that interpretations may vary among individuals and biblical scholars. It is always beneficial to study the passage in its broader context and consult various commentaries and resources for a comprehensive understanding.
