Psalms 9:10

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Psalms 9:10 (KJV)

Psalm 9 is a song of thanksgiving. The psalmist praises God for righteous judgment and deliverance from enemies. This verse sits within that celebration, showing why God deserves trust. It also contrasts the wicked, who may be forgotten, with those who seek God, who are not forsaken.

In Scripture, a person’s name often reveals their character. To “know thy name” means more than knowing a title. It means understanding who God truly is: His faithfulness, love, power, and holiness. This knowledge is not merely intellectual. It grows through a personal relationship with Him. Knowing God’s name goes beyond head knowledge; it implies a deep, intimate acquaintance with His nature and attributes.

The verse connects knowing God with trusting Him. When we see His character clearly, trust becomes a natural response. We rely on His wisdom, surrender our fears, and believe He will keep His promises. Trust is not blind. It rests on what we know about God. This trust is foundational to a relationship with Him, grounded in the character He has revealed.

The second half gives the reason for this trust: the Lord does not forsake those who seek Him. Seeking God means turning to Him honestly, with a heart that desires His presence. God’s faithfulness is shown in His constant care for such people. He never abandons them. This assurance means seeking God is never in vain; He responds to those who earnestly pursue Him.

This promise echoes other places where God reveals His name and character. In Exodus 34:6-7, the Lord proclaims Himself as merciful, gracious, and forgiving. That revelation invites the same trust described here. The contrast is also clear: the wicked may be forgotten, but those who seek God are never left alone. This verse connects knowledge of God, trust in Him, and the experience of His faithfulness.

We can deepen our knowledge of God through prayer, reading His Word, and fellowship with other believers. As we learn more of His nature, our trust grows stronger. In times of trouble, we can remember that He has promised not to forsake us. We can bring our worries to Him and rest in His care. This verse encourages us to seek Him confidently, knowing He will not abandon us.

Do we truly know God’s name, or only know about Him? Trust flows from relationship. When we seek Him with our whole heart, we find that He is already near. His faithfulness gives us confidence to face each day. This promise is a source of comfort and hope, affirming that God is attentive to those who call upon Him.
