“Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.”

Psalm 96:13 (KJV):

“Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.”

Context:Psalm 96 is a joyful song of praise and worship to God. It encourages all people to sing a new song to the Lord and declare His glory among the nations. The psalm calls for the whole earth to worship and rejoice before the Lord, recognizing His greatness and righteousness. In verse 13, the focus shifts to the coming judgment of the Lord.

The Coming of the Lord:The verse begins with the affirmation that the Lord is coming. This refers to the future time when God will reveal His presence and establish His righteous rule over the earth. It reminds believers that God is not distant or uninvolved in the affairs of humanity. The Lord’s coming signifies His active involvement in the world and His intervention in human history.

The Judgment of the Earth:The verse states that when the Lord comes, He will judge the earth. The judgment spoken of here is the righteous judgment of God, where He evaluates and renders a just verdict on the actions, intentions, and hearts of people. This judgment will be based on God’s perfect knowledge, wisdom, and righteousness.

Righteousness and Truth:The verse emphasizes that God’s judgment is characterized by righteousness and truth. Righteousness refers to God’s perfect justice and moral uprightness. He judges impartially, without favoritism or prejudice, taking into account every action and motive. Truth signifies God’s faithfulness, reliability, and adherence to His own standards of righteousness. God’s judgment is based on absolute truth and cannot be deceived or misled.

Application:

  • Psalm 96:13 reminds believers of the future judgment when God will set everything right. It should encourage us to live righteously and pursue truth in our lives. We can find comfort and assurance in knowing that God’s judgment will be just and fair, as He judges the world with righteousness and truth.

It also serves as a reminder to share the good news of God’s righteousness and truth with others. We are called to declare His glory among the nations, proclaim His salvation, and invite people to worship and acknowledge Him as the righteous Judge.

In summary, Psalm 96:13 highlights the coming judgment of the Lord, emphasizing His righteousness and truth. It encourages believers to live righteously, trust in God’s judgment, and proclaim His glory to the nations.
