“Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.”

1. Context: Psalm 97 is a song of praise and exultation, celebrating the sovereignty and glory of God. The psalm emphasizes the righteous rule of God and calls upon the people to worship and rejoice in Him.

2. Rejoice in the LORD: The psalm begins with an invitation to rejoice in the LORD. This rejoicing is not based on circumstances but on the character and nature of God. As believers, we are called to find our joy and satisfaction in God Himself, recognizing His goodness, faithfulness, and love.

3. Ye righteous: The invitation to rejoice is directed specifically to the righteous. In this context, the righteous are those who have been declared righteous through faith in God and His salvation. It includes those who have placed their trust in God and live in accordance with His will.

4. Give thanks: Along with rejoicing, the psalmist calls the righteous to give thanks. Gratitude is an expression of recognizing and acknowledging the goodness and blessings of God. It is a response to His grace and mercy. The call to give thanks reminds us of the importance of cultivating a heart of gratitude in our relationship with God.

5. Remembrance of His holiness: The psalm concludes by directing the righteous to give thanks at the remembrance of God’s holiness. Holiness refers to God’s absolute moral perfection and separateness from sin. Remembering God’s holiness is a powerful reminder of His uniqueness, His authority, and His worthiness of our worship and devotion. It calls us to approach Him with reverence and awe.
