Revelation 11:7

And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

Revelation 11:7 (KJV)

The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic work written by the apostle John. It contains visions and prophecies regarding the end times and the ultimate victory of God over evil. Revelation 11 focuses on the two witnesses, who are given authority to prophesy for a period of 1,260 days.

In this verse, the “beast” represents a powerful and antagonistic force that opposes the two witnesses. The Greek word translated “bottomless pit” is “abyss,” a place of darkness and chaos. The beast ascending from the abyss symbolizes a demonic or evil force unleashed against the witnesses.

The phrase “when they shall have finished their testimony” indicates that the two witnesses have completed their divine assignment of proclaiming God’s message during the specified period. Their testimony refers to their prophetic preaching and witness for God. The sequence is clear: they finish their testimony, the beast makes war, and the beast overcomes and kills them. This is not a sign of God’s abandonment but part of the prophetic timeline.

The beast’s victory is temporary and is not the final word. The broader context of Revelation shows God’s ultimate victory over evil. This event is part of the larger spiritual battle between good and evil.

The two witnesses are believed by many scholars to symbolize the faithful Church or God’s people throughout history, who are given authority to proclaim God’s truth. The beast represents the forces of evil and persecution that seek to oppose and suppress God’s message.

This verse highlights the reality of spiritual warfare and the opposition that believers may face when standing for truth. It reminds us that, although evil may seem to gain temporary victories, God ultimately triumphs over all opposition. The death of the witnesses is a direct result of the beast’s war against them, which is permitted by God. This points to the reality of persecution and martyrdom for faithful witnesses, even within God’s sovereign plan.

Revelation 11:7 portrays a significant moment when the two witnesses complete their testimony and are opposed by a powerful evil force, which temporarily overcomes and kills them. Yet this verse must be interpreted in the larger context of Revelation, where the ultimate triumph of God over evil is assured.
