Revelation 12:15
And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
Revelation 12:15 (KJV)
Context
In the book of Revelation, the apostle John receives visions revealing end-time events. Revelation 12 presents a great sign in heaven: a woman, a dragon, and a male child. The dragon, identified in Revelation 12:9 as Satan, stands before the woman to devour her child, but the child is caught up to God’s throne. The woman flees into the wilderness, where God has prepared a place for her. In this verse, the serpent casts water like a flood from his mouth after the woman, seeking to sweep her away.
Meaning
The woman represents the faithful people of God, including both Israel and the Church. The dragon symbolizes Satan, the enemy of God who opposes His plans. The flood is a metaphor for the devil’s overwhelming and destructive tactics—persecution, deception, false teaching, and opposition—aimed at carrying away God’s people. The serpent’s action is deliberate and aggressive, showing the intensity of spiritual warfare believers face.
Although the serpent casts the flood, the woman is not ultimately overcome. The immediate context reveals that the earth helps the woman by swallowing the flood, demonstrating divine intervention and protection. The woman’s preservation is not due to her own strength but to God’s providential care. This reminds us that even in the face of intense spiritual attacks, God’s power is greater, and He will safeguard His faithful followers.
Biblical connections
The conflict between the serpent and the woman echoes the promise in Genesis 3:15, where the seed of the woman will crush the serpent’s head. Throughout Scripture, God promises to protect His people and preserve a remnant. The flood, while threatening, is overcome by God’s intervention, pointing to the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom over the forces of evil.
Application
Revelation 12:15 serves as a reminder for believers today. We live in a world filled with spiritual battles, trials, and temptations. Like the woman in the vision, we may face opposition from the enemy seeking to overwhelm and destroy us. However, we can find encouragement in knowing that God is with us and will protect us. We must remain steadfast in our faith, trusting in God’s power and relying on His strength to overcome the schemes of the enemy.
Reflection
Consider the ways the enemy may try to flood your life with doubt, fear, or discouragement. Yet take heart: the same God who caused the earth to swallow the flood stands ready to deliver you. His purposes cannot be thwarted, and His protection is certain for those who trust in Him.
