Revelation 13:11

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book, written by the apostle John whilst exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains visions and prophecies about the future, including the final judgment and the return of Jesus Christ.

Identifying the “beast”:In this verse, John sees another “beast” emerging from the earth. This beast is distinct from the previous one described in Revelation 13:1-10, which represented the Antichrist or the oppressive world system. This new beast is commonly referred to as the “false prophet.”

Two horns like a lamb:The beast that John sees has two horns resembling those of a lamb. In biblical symbolism, the lamb often represents Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God. However, in this case, the horns indicate a deceptive imitation of Christ, implying that the false prophet will present himself in a seemingly meek and harmless manner.

Speaking as a dragon:Despite its lamb-like appearance, the beast speaks with the voice of a dragon. In the Bible, the dragon is often associated with Satan, the enemy of God and humanity. This indicates that the false prophet will use deceptive words and teachings, leading people away from the truth and towards spiritual deception.

Interpretation:The false prophet mentioned in Revelation 13:11 is believed to be a figure who will arise in the last days, aligning with the Antichrist to deceive and manipulate people during the period known as the Great Tribulation. Together, they will promote a false religious system and a global government, seeking to control and persecute believers. The false prophet’s deceptive tactics, coupled with his false religious authority, will lead many astray.

Application:This verse serves as a warning to believers to be discerning in the last days and not be swayed by false teachings or deceptive leaders. It emphasises the importance of knowing and holding onto the true teachings of Jesus Christ, as outlined in the Bible. Believers are called to test every spirit, teaching, or prophet against the Word of God (1 John 4:1), and to remain faithful to Christ even in the face of opposition and deception.
