Revelation 16:6

“For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.”

Context of Revelation 16:6: Revelation 16 describes the pouring out of the seven bowls of God’s wrath upon the earth, also known as the “seven last plagues.” These plagues represent God’s judgment upon the wicked and His final acts of justice before the return of Jesus Christ. Verse 6 specifically addresses the shedding of the blood of saints and prophets.

Shedding the blood of saints and prophets:This verse points out that those who have shed the blood of saints and prophets will be given blood to drink. Throughout history, there have been instances where God’s people, the saints and prophets, have faced persecution and martyrdom for their faith. The shedding of their blood symbolises the suffering and injustice inflicted upon them by the wicked.

Divine retribution and justice:The phrase “thou hast given them blood to drink” signifies the righteous judgment and retribution from God upon those who have persecuted His people. It reflects the principle of reaping what one sows. God, in His justice, allows the wicked to experience the consequences of their actions. This is a reminder that God is a just and righteous Judge who holds all accountable for their deeds.

The worthiness of the wicked:The verse concludes by stating, “for they are worthy.” This statement emphasises that the judgment poured out upon the wicked is just and appropriate. The wicked have chosen to rebel against God, reject His truth, and persecute His people. Their actions demonstrate their unworthiness of God’s grace and mercy, leading to their deserving of judgment.

Lessons for believers:Revelation 16:6 serves as a reminder and encouragement to believers. Firstly, it assures us that God sees the suffering of His people and promises justice for the persecution they endure. It also underscores the importance of standing firm in our faith, even in the face of opposition or hardship. Lastly, it reminds us that God’s judgment is righteous, and He will hold the wicked accountable for their actions.

Overall, Revelation 16:6 highlights the divine justice and retribution that will come upon those who shed the blood of saints and prophets. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people and His commitment to bringing justice to the world.
