Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.”

Context:This verse is part of the description of the judgment and destruction of Babylon, a symbolic representation of the world’s system and its rebellion against God.

Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning in context.

“Therefore shall her plagues come in one day”:The word “her” refers to Babylon, which represents a corrupt and sinful world system. The “plagues” mentioned here signify divine judgment or punishment that will come upon Babylon. This phrase indicates that the judgment will be swift and severe, coming suddenly and unexpectedly.

“Death, and mourning, and famine”:These three elements signify the consequences of God’s judgment. “Death” represents the loss of life and the destruction that will come upon Babylon. “Mourning” represents grief and sorrow, indicating the mourning of those who were part of the sinful system and now face its destruction. “Famine” signifies scarcity and lack, suggesting that the resources and sustenance that Babylon relied on will be cut off, leading to a state of deprivation.

“She shall be utterly burned with fire”:This phrase indicates that Babylon will be completely destroyed by fire. Fire is often associated with divine judgment and purification in biblical imagery. The destruction of Babylon represents the ultimate judgment and the end of its sinful reign.

“For strong is the Lord God who judgeth her”:This verse acknowledges the strength and authority of God as the one who brings judgment upon Babylon. It highlights the sovereignty and power of God in executing justice and judgment against the rebellious world system.

Overall, Revelation 18:8 depicts the swift and severe judgment that will come upon Babylon, symbolizing the world’s sinful and corrupt systems. It emphasizes the finality of God’s judgment and the power of God in executing it. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of rebellion against God and the ultimate destruction of all that opposes Him.
