Revelation 19:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.”

Revelation 19:4 is part of a larger passage that describes the scene in heaven after the fall of Babylon, the great harlot, as depicted in Revelation 18. In this verse, we see the response of the twenty‑four elders and the four living creatures to the triumph and judgment of God.

The Four and Twenty Elders:The twenty‑four elders are mentioned multiple times throughout the book of Revelation. They are often considered representative of the redeemed people of God from both the Old and New Testaments, symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. They are seated around the throne of God, clothed in white garments, and wearing crowns (Revelation 4:4). Here, they fall down and worship God in response to His righteous judgment.

The Four Living Creatures:The four living creatures are also mentioned several times in Revelation (Revelation 4:6‑8). They are described as having the likeness of a lion, a calf, a man, and an eagle. They are associated with worship, proclaiming the holiness of God, and offering praise to Him. In this verse, they join the twenty‑four elders in worshipping God.

Worshipping God:The response of the elders and the living creatures is characterized by falling down and worshipping God. Their worship is expressed through the words “Amen” and “Alleluia.” “Amen” is a Hebrew word that means “truly” or “so be it.” It is often used as an affirmation or agreement with a statement. “Alleluia” is a transliteration of the Hebrew phrase “Hallelujah,” which means “praise the Lord.” It is a declaration of praise and exaltation to God.

This verse portrays a powerful and reverent scene in heaven, where the redeemed and heavenly beings unite in worship and adoration of God. It emphasizes the righteousness of God’s judgment and the triumph of His sovereign rule. The fall of Babylon, which represents the world’s corrupt and oppressive systems, elicits a response of awe and praise from those in heaven.
