Revelation 2:25

But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

Revelation 2:25 (KJV)

Jesus speaks here to the church in Thyatira, one of the seven churches addressed in Revelation 2-3. The church was commended for its works, love, service, faith, and patience (Revelation 2:19). Yet it was rebuked for tolerating a false prophetess named Jezebel, who led some believers into sexual immorality and idolatry (Revelation 2:20-23). In verse 25, Jesus turns to the faithful believers who have not followed her teaching, urging them to hold fast to what they have until He comes.

The phrase “that which ye have already” refers to the faithful word, the sound doctrine, and the profession of faith received from Christ and His apostles. It includes their genuine love, service, faith, and patience, which they had already demonstrated. Jesus commands them to hold fast, meaning to cling firmly and persevere, not allowing these virtues to be compromised by false teaching or worldly pressure.

The promise “till I come” points to the certainty of Christ’s return. This coming is both a motivation and an encouragement for believers to remain steadfast. The return of Christ is a central New Testament theme, and believers are called to live in anticipation of that glorious event.

This verse echoes Revelation 3:11, where Jesus says, “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” It also connects with Hebrews 10:36, which speaks of needing patience to do the will of God and receive the promise, and with 2 Thessalonians 2:15, where Paul urges believers to stand fast and hold the traditions they were taught.

Revelation 2:25 applies beyond the church in Thyatira. It reminds all believers to hold fast to their faith in Christ, remain committed to His teachings, and persevere in living a godly life until His return. Despite challenges and temptations, we are called to stay faithful and continue doing good works motivated by love for God and others.

Jesus’ command is not to gain something new but to keep what has already been given. The Christian life is a steady, faithful holding on to the truth and grace we have received, until the day Christ appears.
