Revelation 20:2
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Revelation 20:2 (KJV)
Context
Revelation 20:2 belongs to the larger passage describing the thousand-year reign of Christ, commonly called the Millennium. In the preceding chapter, John sees the victorious return of Jesus, who defeats the forces of evil. Now an angel descends from heaven holding the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. This angel seizes Satan, binds him, and prepares to cast him into the abyss, as the following verses show.
Meaning
The verse identifies the bound being through four titles: the dragon, that old serpent, the Devil, and Satan. Each name reveals a different aspect of his character and work. The dragon pictures his destructive and powerful nature, as seen elsewhere in Revelation. The old serpent points back to the Garden of Eden, where he deceived Eve. The Devil means accuser or slanderer, and Satan means adversary. Together these titles show that the same enemy who opposed God from the beginning is now being restrained.
The binding itself is described as lasting a thousand years. The text does not explain the exact nature of this binding or the millennium, and faithful Christians have understood it in different ways. Three main interpretations have been offered throughout church history. Premillennialism holds that Christ will return before a literal thousand-year reign on earth, during which Satan is bound and unable to deceive the nations. Postmillennialism views the thousand years as a symbolic era of gospel prosperity that culminates in Christ’s return. Amillennialism understands the thousand years figuratively, representing the present church age, with Satan’s binding limiting his power to deceive the nations until Christ returns.
Biblical connections
The phrase “that old serpent” directly recalls the serpent in Genesis 3, who deceived Adam and Eve. This connection shows the continuity of Satan’s opposition to God throughout human history. The verse also links to Revelation 20:3, where the angel casts Satan into the abyss and seals it so that he cannot deceive the nations until the thousand years are finished. The immediate actor is an angel, not Christ directly, yet the action demonstrates God’s sovereign control over the adversary.
Application
This verse assures believers that Satan is not free to do as he pleases. God has set limits on his power, and his deception of the nations will be restrained for a season. Even when evil seems strong, the outcome is certain: Satan will be bound, and God’s redemptive plan will reach its fulfillment. Believers can take courage that the chief adversary is subject to divine authority.
Reflection
How does the certainty of Satan’s binding affect the way you face spiritual opposition today? The same God who holds the key to the abyss and the great chain also holds your life in His hands. You can trust Him to restrain evil and to bring His purposes to completion in His time.
