Revelation 22:8
And I Iohn saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seene, I fell downe, to worship before the feete of the Angel, which shewed me these things. Revelation 22:8 (KJV)
Context: This verse is part of the closing chapter of the book of Revelation, which contains the vision and prophecy given to the Apostle John on the island of Patmos. In this particular verse, John describes his reaction upon witnessing and hearing the things revealed to him. John states that he saw and heard these things. The book of Revelation is filled with vivid imagery and symbolic descriptions of future events, including the ultimate victory of God, the return of Jesus Christ, and the establishment of the new heaven and new earth. John witnessed these prophetic visions and received divine revelation about the culmination of God’s plan for humanity. After seeing and hearing these things, John says that he fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed him these things. It is important to note that John’s initial response was to worship the angel, demonstrating his reverence and awe at the divine revelation he received. However, John’s act of worship is met with a correction in the subsequent verses. Revelation 22:9 records the angel’s response: “See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.” This correction underscores the importance of directing worship solely to God and recognizing His supreme authority and majesty. It serves as a reminder to maintain a proper perspective in our worship and to honor God alone. In some later manuscript traditions, the next verse records John saying that he fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed him these things. That wording is not found in the King James Version of Revelation 22:8, which ends after the statement that John saw and heard. The correction of John’s instinct to worship the angel appears in the following verse, where the angel says, “Do not do that,” emphasizing that worship belongs to God alone. Overall, Revelation 22:8 reminds us of the importance of listening to divine revelation and directing our reverence and adoration solely toward God, recognizing His supreme authority and majesty.
