Revelation 5:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:21
Listen to this article

“And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”

Revelation 5:2 is part of the vision that the Apostle John received while exiled on the island of Patmos. In this particular scene, John witnesses a remarkable event in heaven, where God the Father is seated on His throne, holding a scroll in His right hand. The scroll is described as being sealed with seven seals.

In the verse, John sees a strong angel making a proclamation with a loud voice. This angel poses a question to the entire heavenly realm: “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” The book mentioned here is the scroll in God’s hand. The seals represent obstacles or barriers that prevent the contents of the scroll from being revealed.

This proclamation raises the question of who possesses the authority and worthiness to undertake the task of opening the sealed scroll. The answer to this question is vital because the opening of the scroll and the loosening of its seals will unveil God’s plan for the end times and the establishment of His kingdom on earth.

The search for a worthy one begins in the following verses, with John observing that no one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth is found to be worthy. This realization causes John to weep bitterly, as it seems that no one can fulfill this significant role.

However, in the subsequent verses (Revelation 5:5-7), one of the twenty‑four elders in heaven assures John that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed and is worthy to open the scroll and its seals. This Lion is a symbolic reference to Jesus Christ, who is described as the “Lamb that was slain” (Revelation 5:12) later in the chapter.

The significance of Revelation 5:2 lies in the identification of Jesus Christ as the only one who is worthy to fulfill God’s plan and reveal the events leading up to His kingdom’s establishment. Jesus, through His sacrificial death and resurrection, has overcome sin and death, and therefore, He has the authority and worthiness to execute God’s divine purposes.

This verse highlights the uniqueness and supremacy of Jesus Christ as the central figure in God’s redemptive plan. It emphasizes that He alone possesses the authority to unlock the mysteries of God’s unfolding plan for humanity and bring about the ultimate consummation of His kingdom.

In conclusion, Revelation 5:2 underscores the incomparable worthiness of Jesus Christ to open the sealed scroll and reveals His pivotal role in God’s plan for the culmination of human history.
