Revelation 5:1
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
Revelation 5:1 (KJV)
Context
John, exiled on the island of Patmos, receives a vision of heaven. He sees God the Father seated on the throne, holding in His right hand a book written on both sides and sealed with seven seals.
Meaning
The book represents God’s comprehensive plan for the future, including judgment and redemption. Being written on both sides signifies its fullness—nothing is omitted. The seven seals, in ancient custom, denote authority, ownership, and security; they conceal the contents until the rightful one opens them. The right hand of God symbolizes power and sovereign action, assuring that history is held securely in His control.
Biblical connections
This imagery echoes Old Testament prophetic traditions where sealed writings signify the certainty and secrecy of divine revelation until the appointed time, as in Daniel 12:4. The sealed book also anticipates the Lamb, Jesus Christ, who alone is found worthy to break the seals and unveil God’s purposes.
Application
This verse calls believers to trust God’s sovereignty even when His plans are hidden. It reassures us that history is not chaotic but directed by God, and that His purposes will be accomplished in His timing.
Reflection
Consider the awe of standing before the throne, seeing the Creator hold the scroll of destiny. Let this vision deepen your reverence and confidence in the God who holds all things in His hand.
