Revelation 5:4

Listen to this article

“And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.”

Context:This verse is part of the vision described in the book of Revelation, where the apostle John sees a scroll in the right hand of God, sealed with seven seals. The question of worthiness arises as no one is found suitable to open and read the contents of the scroll.

To understand the significance of this verse, it is helpful to provide some context. The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book, written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains visions and prophecies regarding the end times and the ultimate victory of God over evil.

In Revelation 5:1-4, John is in the heavenly realm, witnessing the throne of God. He sees God sitting on the throne, holding a scroll in His right hand. The scroll is described as having writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. The contents of the scroll are unknown, but they likely pertain to God’s divine plan for the culmination of human history.

As John gazes upon this scene, he realizes that no one in heaven or on earth is found worthy to open and read the contents of the scroll. This realization moves him to weep profusely. John’s tears indicate his deep concern that the divine plan would remain sealed, and the future would remain unknown.

John’s reaction reflects the desperate need for someone worthy to fulfill God’s plan and bring about the events depicted in the scroll. The apostle’s weeping emphasizes the gravity of the situation and the longing for a solution.

The theme of worthiness is crucial in this verse. The scroll contains God’s sovereign plan for the end times, and only someone worthy and qualified can open and execute that plan. In the following verses (Revelation 5:5-14), John learns that Jesus Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Root of David, is the only one found worthy to open the seals and reveal God’s plan.

This scene emphasizes the unique and central role of Jesus Christ in God’s plan of salvation. He alone is the worthy one, who by His sacrificial death and resurrection has redeemed humanity and possesses the authority to carry out God’s divine purposes. Through His triumph over sin and death, Jesus is the key to understanding and fulfilling the plan of God.
