Revelation 5:5
“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
Revelation 5:5 (KJV) states: "And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof."
Context and Background:The book of Revelation, written by the Apostle John, is a prophetic book that unveils future events and reveals the ultimate triumph of Jesus Christ over evil. In this particular passage, John describes a heavenly scene where a scroll with seven seals is presented. No one in heaven or on earth is found worthy to open the scroll except for the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah:The title "Lion of the tribe of Judah" refers to Jesus Christ. This title is derived from the prophecy in Genesis 49:9, where Jacob blesses his son Judah and refers to him as a lion’s cub. Jesus, being a descendant of Judah, fulfils this messianic prophecy. This title highlights Jesus’ strength, power, and authority.
The Root of David:Another title given to Jesus in Revelation 5:5 is the "Root of David." This title emphasizes Jesus’ royal lineage and his connection to King David. It signifies that Jesus is the descendant of David and the rightful heir to David’s throne. Isaiah 11:1 prophesies that "a shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots," which refers to the messianic lineage from which Jesus comes.
Opening the Scroll and the Seven Seals:In the context of Revelation 5, the scroll represents God’s plan for the future. It contains the judgments and events that will unfold during the end times. The seals on the scroll need to be opened to reveal the contents and bring about the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
The fact that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David (Jesus), is the only one found worthy to open the scroll demonstrates his unique authority and power to carry out God’s plan of redemption and judgment. Through his sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus has overcome sin and conquered death, making him the only one who can bring about the final fulfillment of God’s plan.
Application:
- Assurance:This passage provides assurance to believers that Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, has prevailed over sin, Satan, and death. As followers of Christ, we can find comfort and confidence in knowing that our Savior is in control of all things.
- Worship:The response of the elders in the heavenly scene is worship and praise to Jesus for his victory. As believers, we are called to worship and honor Jesus for his power and authority. He is the one who deserves our adoration and reverence.
- Trust in God’s Plan:The sealed scroll represents God’s plan for the future. It reminds us that God is sovereign and has a purpose for everything that happens. In times of uncertainty, we can trust in God’s ultimate control over the events of the world and find hope in the knowledge that Jesus is working out his plan.
- Evangelism:This passage serves as a reminder of the urgency of sharing the Gospel with others. As we recognize Jesus’ authority and power, we are compelled to share the good news of salvation in him. The world needs to hear about the Lion of the tribe of Judah who has triumphed and offers forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life.
