Revelation 6:1

Listen to this article

And I sawe when the Lambe opened one of the seales, and I heard as it were the noise of thunder, one of the foure beastes, saying, Come and see. Revelation 6:1 (KJV)

The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, records a prophetic vision given to him by Jesus Christ. It unveils the events that lead up to the second coming of Christ and the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth. Revelation 6 marks the beginning of a series of judgments known as the seven seals that are unleashed upon the world.

In this vision the Lamb represents Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The Lamb’s role in opening the seals signifies His supreme authority and power to bring about the events described throughout the book.

The opening of the seals represents the unfolding of divine judgment and the progressive revealing of God’s plan. Each seal will disclose a different aspect of that judgment and the events of the end times. The first seal, mentioned in Revelation 6:1, is opened by the Lamb; John hears a sound like thunder, and a voice from one of the four living creatures invites him, “Come and see.”

The four living creatures are heavenly beings that surround the throne of God (see Revelation 4:6‑9). They are associated with the attributes of a lion, an ox (or calf), a man, and an eagle. Their presence underscores their involvement in the unfolding of God’s plan and their connection to both judgment and the redemption of creation.

The invitation to “come and see” gives John a glimpse into the future events that will occur as the seals are broken. It also serves as an invitation to all believers to observe and understand the divine timeline.

Application and lessons flow naturally from this passage. Revelation 6:1 reminds us that Jesus Christ holds authority over all events, including the final judgment. Believers can find comfort in the knowledge that God is in control of the future. The passage also highlights the importance of paying close attention to God’s Word and being watchful for the signs of the times.

Overall, Revelation 6:1 serves as an introduction to the opening of the seals and sets the stage for the subsequent prophetic visions. Because Revelation employs highly symbolic language, its interpretation can vary among scholars and theologians. Therefore, studying it with additional resources and seeking guidance from trusted teachers can provide deeper insight into its meaning.
