Revelation 6:5

Listen to this article

“And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic book written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains a series of visions that reveal future events, including the end times and the return of Jesus Christ.

The Seven Seals:In Revelation chapter 6, John sees a vision of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) opening seven seals of a scroll held by God. Each seal represents a significant event or judgment that will occur in the end times. The third seal is opened in Revelation 6:5.

The Third Seal:The opening of the third seal reveals a black horse, and the one sitting on it is holding a pair of balances in his hand. The colour black often symbolises famine, scarcity, or death. The pair of balances suggests a weighing or measuring of food or goods.

Symbolism:The black horse and the balances symbolise scarcity, economic distress, and famine. This represents a time of great hardship and suffering in the world. The balances indicate that food and resources will become scarce, leading to inflation and economic instability. The black horse and its rider indicate that the consequence of these conditions will be widespread hunger and deprivation.

Spiritual Application:While Revelation contains prophetic imagery, it also has spiritual lessons for believers. The opening of the third seal reminds us that in times of hardship and scarcity, it is essential to remain steadfast in our faith. It teaches us to trust in God’s provision and seek His guidance even in difficult circumstances. It also reminds us of the importance of caring for those in need, especially during times of crisis.

The Larger Context:The opening of the seals in Revelation 6 is just the beginning of a series of judgments and events that will unfold during the end times. These judgments serve as a wake‑up call to humanity, calling them to repentance and to turn to God. The book of Revelation ultimately points to the triumph of Jesus Christ over evil and the establishment of His kingdom.

Remember that the book of Revelation is highly symbolic and requires careful interpretation. It is advisable to study the book as a whole and seek guidance from trusted biblical scholars and teachers to gain a comprehensive understanding of its meaning.

Note: Interpretations of the book of Revelation may vary among different Christian denominations and scholars.
