Revelation 7:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:21
Listen to this article

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic book written by the Apostle John. It contains a series of visions and symbolic language that reveal God’s plan for the end times. In Revelation 7, John sees a vision of the sealing of the 144,000 servants of God from the twelve tribes of Israel, followed by a great multitude of believers from every nation.

Four angels standing on the four corners of the earth:In this verse, John sees four angels positioned at the four corners of the earth. This language is symbolic, representing the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) and indicating that these angels have authority over the entire earth. The number four often signifies universality and completeness.

Holding the four winds of the earth:The angels are seen holding the four winds of the earth. Winds in the Bible can represent forces of destruction or judgment (Jeremiah 49:36; Daniel 7:2). Here, the winds represent the judgment of God that is temporarily restrained. This holding back of the winds signifies a pause or delay in the outpouring of God’s judgment upon the earth.

Purpose of holding back the winds:The purpose of the angels holding back the winds is to prevent any further destruction from taking place. It signifies a period of respite or grace before the final judgment is unleashed. This delay allows for the sealing of the 144,000 servants of God and the gathering of a great multitude of believers from every nation (Revelation 7:3-4, 9).

Significance and application:This verse highlights God’s sovereignty over the earth and His control over the forces of nature. It reveals His merciful nature, giving humanity an opportunity to repent and turn to Him before the final judgment. It reminds believers that God is in control, even in the midst of chaos and tribulation. It also serves as a call to readiness and preparedness for the coming of Christ and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan.
