Revelation 7:2
“And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea.”
Context:Before diving into Revelation 7:2, it’s important to understand the context of the book of Revelation. Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and contains a series of visions and prophecies given to the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. The book explores the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ and the events leading up to His second coming.
The angel ascending from the east:In this verse, John sees another angel ascending from the east. The direction of the angel’s ascent signifies a new beginning or the dawning of something significant. The east is often associated with the rising sun, which symbolizes hope, light, and the coming of a new day. This angel brings an important message and plays a significant role in the events described in Revelation.
The seal of the living God:The angel is described as having the seal of the living God. In biblical times, a seal was used to authenticate or mark something as genuine and secure. Here, the seal represents the authority and ownership of God over His people. It symbolizes His protection, provision, and preservation of those who belong to Him. The seal assures that God’s people are His chosen ones and are under His divine care and guardianship.
The cry to the four angels:The angel with the seal cries out with a loud voice to the four angels who were given the authority to bring harm to the earth and the sea. The cry signifies a pause or interruption in the unfolding events, as if a restraining order is being issued. It serves as a reminder that God is in control and has the power to protect His people from harm. It also shows that God’s judgments are measured and deliberate, and He is mindful of His faithful servants.
Spiritual significance:Revelation 7:2 highlights God’s sovereignty, protection, and authority over His creation. It reassures believers that in the midst of chaos and judgment, God’s people are marked and sealed as His own. They are under His divine care and are shielded from ultimate harm. This verse emphasizes the importance of placing our trust in God and seeking His guidance and protection in all circumstances.
Overall, Revelation 7:2 encourages believers to remain faithful to God, knowing that He is in control and has sealed them for His purposes. It reminds us to seek God’s guidance and trust in His provision, especially during times of trial and uncertainty.
