Revelation 7:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:21

“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

This verse is part of the vision given to the apostle John on the island of Patmos. The book of Revelation, also known as the Apocalypse, contains a series of prophetic visions that John received, revealing the culmination of God’s plan for the world and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

In this particular verse, John describes a scene in heaven where a great multitude of people, representing the redeemed, are standing before the throne of God. They are clothed in white robes, signifying their purity and righteousness in Christ (Revelation 7:9). The Lamb, referring to Jesus Christ, is in the midst of the throne, symbolizing His central role and authority in God’s plan of salvation.

The first part of the verse states, “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them.” Here, the Lamb represents Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd who lovingly cares for His people. He provides nourishment for their spiritual needs, just as a shepherd feeds and sustains his flock. In the context of this verse, it speaks of the eternal provision and sustenance that believers will experience in the presence of God. It reflects the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise in John 10:10, where He said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

The second part of the verse says, “and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters.” This phrase signifies the abundant life and eternal refreshment that believers will enjoy in the presence of God. In various places in the Bible, water is used as a metaphor for spiritual refreshment, cleansing, and eternal life. Jesus Himself referred to this living water in John 4:14 when He said, “But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

The final part of the verse states, “and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” This powerful image represents the complete eradication of sorrow, pain, and suffering in the presence of God. It speaks of the eternal comfort and joy that believers will experience in the fullness of God’s kingdom. It echoes the promise given in Isaiah 25:8, where it says, “He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces.”

Revelation 7:17 provides a glimpse into the glorious future that awaits believers in Christ. It emphasises the eternal provision, spiritual refreshment, and everlasting joy that will be found in the presence of God. It serves as a source of hope and encouragement, reminding believers of the ultimate victory and restoration that will be realised through Jesus Christ.
