Revelation 9:4

And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Revelation 9:4 (KJV)

The Book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and prophetic book containing visions given to the Apostle John. It unveils future events surrounding the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom. In the preceding verses of Revelation 9, the fifth angel sounds his trumpet, and John sees a star fall from heaven to the earth. This star represents an angel who is given the key to the bottomless pit. When the pit is opened, smoke arises, darkening the sun and the air. Then, locust-like creatures are released from the pit, granted power to torment people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

The locust-like creatures in this passage are symbolic, representing a demonic force or an army of evil beings. Their purpose is to inflict torment upon those who do not have the seal of God. The command not to harm the grass, green things, or trees shows that their destruction is targeted specifically at people rather than the natural environment. This restriction contrasts with the earlier trumpet judgment in Revelation 8:7, where the earth’s vegetation was struck. Here, the locusts’ mission is deliberately limited to unsealed humanity, indicating a measured and purposeful judgment.

The seal of God mentioned in Revelation 9:4 refers to a spiritual mark or identification given to believers. This seal signifies the protection and belonging of believers in contrast to those who do not have it. The verse also connects to Revelation 7:3, where God’s servants are sealed on their foreheads before the judgments begin, showing that the seal is a mark of divine protection and ownership.

The command given to the locusts also highlights the sovereignty of God over demonic forces. They can only act within the bounds He sets; they are not autonomous but under divine command. This provides assurance to believers that God’s purposes are being accomplished even through judgment, and that His people are safe in Him. The protection is not based on human merit but on God’s sovereign choice and grace.

The seal of God is a theme that runs through Revelation, and this verse is a key moment where its protective function is explicitly demonstrated. The restriction from harming vegetation may also symbolize that this judgment is directed at humanity, not the created order, showing that God’s redemptive purposes for creation remain intact.

This passage highlights the significance of having the seal of God. It emphasizes the spiritual distinction between those who belong to God and those who do not. It reminds believers of the security and protection they have in Christ. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences for those who reject God’s offer of salvation and choose to align themselves with the forces of evil.

Revelation 9:4 portrays a vivid prophetic scene where locust-like creatures are released to torment those who do not have the seal of God. It serves as a reminder of the spiritual battle between good and evil, the importance of having the seal of God, and the need for individuals to turn to God for salvation and protection. For the believer, this verse is a call to trust in God’s protection and to live as one who bears His seal, with confidence that no judgment can touch those who are His.
