Revelation 9:5

And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

Revelation 9:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the fifth trumpet judgment, also called the first woe, in the apostle John’s apocalyptic vision. The book of Revelation uses highly symbolic imagery to convey spiritual truths, so its language must be interpreted with care and humility.

The verse describes a specific group of demonic beings, often understood as locusts, who are given limited authority to torment but not to kill those who lack God’s seal. The phrase “it was given” is significant: it shows that God sovereignly permits and bounds this judgment. The torment lasts five months, a definite but limited period, and its pain is compared to the sting of a scorpion, emphasizing intense suffering.

Interpretations vary regarding the identity of those tormented and the meaning of the five months. Some see a literal time period, while others view it as symbolic of a limited season of distress. The text itself does not explain the symbolism, so caution is appropriate.

The scorpion simile recalls the threat of serpents and scorpions in Luke 10:19, where spiritual authority is given to believers. Here, the same imagery is reversed to describe judgment. The limitation of the torment also echoes God’s control over affliction, as seen in Job 1:12, where Satan cannot act beyond divine permission.

The primary message is that a time of intense suffering will come, but its purpose is not death; it serves as a warning and a call to repentance. Even in judgment, God sets boundaries, showing that His mercy and sovereignty remain. This should lead readers to examine their own lives and turn to God while there is still time.

Revelation ultimately points to the victory of Jesus Christ and the hope of His return. This verse, though sobering, reminds us that God’s judgments are measured and purposeful, and that His plan culminates in restoration and eternal kingdom.
