And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

Context

In Revelation 7, John first witnesses the sealing of 144,000 servants of God from the twelve tribes of Israel. He then sees a great multitude that no one could number, comprising people from every nation, tribe, people, and language. This multitude stands before the throne and the Lamb, clothed in white robes and holding palm branches, crying out salvation to God and the Lamb. Revelation 7:11 then shifts the focus to the angels.

Meaning

John sees all the angels standing around the throne, together with the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures. The angels fall before the throne on their faces, expressing reverence and worship to God. The Greek verb translated “worshipped” (prosekynēsan) means to bow down or prostrate oneself, indicating an act of deep reverence and adoration.

The act of worship is central in this verse. The angels, heavenly beings created by God, display utmost reverence and adoration toward Him. Their falling on their faces signifies submission, humility, and recognition of God’s greatness and holiness. The angels’ position around the throne, outside the elders and the four living creatures, reflects an ordered heavenly hierarchy, yet all created beings—angels, elders, and living creatures alike—owe worship to God alone.
