Romans 1:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”

Context: The Book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is a letter addressed to the believers in Rome. It explores the foundational truths of the Gospel and provides a comprehensive understanding of God’s plan of salvation.

The righteousness of God: The phrase “therein is the righteousness of God revealed” refers to the Gospel message, which unveils God’s plan of salvation and His righteousness. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s righteousness is made known.

From faith to faith: This expression emphasizes that salvation is obtained through faith alone. It signifies that faith is the starting point and continues to be the means by which we experience the righteousness of God. It suggests a progressive nature of faith, growing from one level of faith to another.

The just shall live by faith: This statement echoes the prophet Habakkuk’s words in Habakkuk 2:It emphasizes the significance of faith in the life of a believer. Here, “just” refers to those who are justified by faith in Jesus Christ. It implies that the righteous, those made right with God through faith, will find their sustenance, purpose, and spiritual vitality in a continued life of faith.

Implications and Application:

  • Righteousness through faith: This verse affirms that our right standing with God is not based on our own efforts or works, but on our faith in Jesus Christ. It highlights the central role of faith in our salvation.
  • Progressive faith: Our faith journey is not stagnant but should grow and mature over time. As we deepen our trust in God, we can experience His righteousness more fully.
  • Living by faith: This verse calls us to live a life of dependence on God, trusting Him for every aspect of our lives. Faith is not merely a one-time event but an ongoing lifestyle that permeates every area of our existence.
  • Remember, as you study God’s Word, it is beneficial to consult various Bible translations, commentaries, and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit for a comprehensive understanding of the passage.
