Romans 1:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”

Context:To better understand Romans 1:19, it’s essential to consider its context within the larger passage. In the preceding verses (Romans 1:18), Paul speaks about the wrath of God being revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth. He emphasises that God’s wrath is justified because humans have knowledge of God but choose to ignore or reject it.

Manifestation of God:The verse begins by stating, “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them.” It signifies that there are aspects of God’s nature and existence that are evident within humanity. God has endowed each person with a level of knowledge or awareness of His existence.

Revelation of God:The verse continues, “for God hath showed it unto them.” This phrase emphasises that God has made Himself known to humanity through various means. The natural world and the created order provide evidence of God’s existence and divine attributes. This revelation is often referred to as general revelation, accessible to all people.

Implications:Romans 1:19 highlights humanity’s responsibility to acknowledge and respond to the knowledge of God made available to them. The subsequent verses (Romans 1:20-23) elaborate on the consequences of failing to recognise and honour God. Paul asserts that those who ignore or suppress this knowledge are without excuse because God’s existence and divine nature are evident in the world around them.

Application:As believers, Romans 1:19 serves as a reminder of the importance of recognising and appreciating God’s revelation in our lives. It encourages us to pay attention to the evidence of God’s existence and divine attributes displayed in creation. This awareness should deepen our reverence for God and foster a desire to know Him more intimately.

  • Summary:Romans 1:19 underscores the idea that God’s existence and divine nature are evident within humanity. God has revealed Himself through general revelation, making it known to all. As believers, we are called to recognise and respond to this revelation, acknowledging God’s presence and seeking a deeper relationship with Him.
