Romans 10:7
“Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)”
Romans 10:7 (KJV):This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Romans where the apostle Paul discusses the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. In this particular section, Paul is explaining that salvation is available to all, regardless of their background or status. He emphasizes the importance of confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in Him for salvation.
In verse 6, Paul writes, “But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above).” Here, Paul is using rhetorical questions to make a point. He wants to emphasize that salvation is not dependent on our human efforts or achievements, such as ascending into heaven or descending into the deep.
Then, in verse 7, Paul continues with another rhetorical question: “Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)” The term “deep” refers to the abyss or the realm of the dead. It symbolizes the grave or the place where the dead reside.
The question is essentially asking who would have the power or authority to descend into the realm of the dead and bring Christ back to life. This question serves to highlight the uniqueness and significance of Christ’s resurrection. It underscores the fact that only God Himself has the power to raise the dead and bring about salvation.
By using this question, Paul is reinforcing the message that salvation is a divine act, accomplished solely by God’s power. It is not something that can be achieved by human effort or merit. The resurrection of Christ from the dead is central to the Christian faith, as it demonstrates God’s victory over sin and death and provides the foundation for our hope in eternal life.
