Romans 10:8

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

Romans 10:8 (KJV)

In Romans 10, Paul contrasts the righteousness of the law, which requires doing, with the righteousness of faith, which receives what is near. He draws from Deuteronomy 30:14 to show that the message of faith was anticipated in the law.

Paul quotes Deuteronomy 30:14, applying Moses’ words about the nearness of God’s commandment to the gospel. The “word” (Greek: rhēma) refers to the spoken message of faith, the gospel concerning Jesus Christ. This word is not distant or difficult to obtain; it is near, in the mouth and heart, meaning it is accessible and ready to be confessed and believed. Paul identifies this as “the word of faith, which we preach,” emphasizing that the message of salvation through faith in Christ is what he and other apostles proclaim.

The verse sets up Romans 10:9-10, which explain that confession with the mouth and belief in the heart lead to salvation. The immediate context contrasts the law’s demand for doing with faith’s reception of what is near. Paul’s use of Deuteronomy shows continuity between the Old Testament and the gospel, demonstrating that the message of faith was anticipated in the law. The word is brought near by God’s revelation, countering any notion that salvation requires extraordinary effort, such as ascending to heaven or descending into the deep.

Key lessons from Romans 10:8:

  • Accessibility of the Word: The verse reminds us that the word of God is accessible and readily available. We can hear, read, and understand it, highlighting God’s desire for all people to have access to His message of salvation.

  • The Word in Our Hearts and Mouths: Paul emphasizes that the word should be internalized and confessed. It is not enough to have head knowledge; the truth should be deeply rooted in our hearts and expressed through our speech.

  • Faith in Christ: The “word of faith” refers to the gospel centered on faith in Jesus Christ. Believing in Him and confessing Him as Lord is essential for righteousness and eternal life.

  • Preaching the Word: Believers are called to share this word of faith with others, allowing more people to hear and respond to the message of salvation.

The word of faith is near, not distant. God has brought it near through His revelation, and it is ready in our mouths and hearts. This nearness calls us to respond: to believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths, and to share this accessible message with others.
