Romans 10:10
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:10 (KJV)
Context
The apostle Paul wrote the book of Romans to explain the gospel in detail. In chapter 10, he addresses salvation and stresses the importance of faith and confession. Romans 10:10 presents two connected actions: believing with the heart and confessing with the mouth. These are not separate steps but two aspects of one saving faith, each tied to a distinct blessing.
Meaning
“With the heart man believeth unto righteousness.” The heart here means the core of a person’s being, not just the mind. True faith is not mere intellectual assent or acknowledging facts about Christ; it is a deep, sincere trust in Jesus Christ that leads to righteousness. This righteousness is being in right standing with God. It is not earned by our efforts or good works but is credited to us through faith in Jesus Christ. When we believe in Him, His righteousness is counted as ours, and we are declared righteous before God.
The second part of the verse says, “with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Confession is the outward, verbal expression of inward faith. It means openly declaring that Jesus is Lord, publicly identifying ourselves as His followers, and speaking out our belief in Him. Confession is not an optional extra; it is the natural outflow of a heart that truly believes and is tied to salvation. Through faith and confession, we receive the gift of salvation, which includes forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and eternal life.
Application
Romans 10:10 teaches that salvation is not a private intellectual exercise but a personal, transformative experience involving both heart and words. As believers, we are called to trust in Jesus with all our hearts and openly profess our faith. This verse prompts us to examine our lives to ensure our faith is genuine and not hidden. True belief leads to righteousness, and genuine confession is the outward expression of that inward faith. May we continue to grow in faith, openly confessing Christ, and experience the fullness of salvation in Him.
