Romans 14:8

For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.

Context

The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the Christians in Rome. In this section of the letter, Paul addresses issues related to personal convictions, disputable matters, and the unity of believers in Christ. The immediate context is verse 7: “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” Verse 8 grounds that claim in the believer’s total belonging to the Lord.

Meaning

The verse begins by emphasising that regardless of whether we live or die, our lives are to be lived for the Lord. As Christians, our ultimate purpose is to honour God in everything we do. Our thoughts, words, and actions should be guided by a desire to please and serve Him. The Greek phrase translated “we are the Lord’s” expresses ownership and belonging. The Lord referred to here is the Lord Jesus Christ, as made explicit in the following verse, Romans 14:9: “For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.” Christ’s death and resurrection are the basis for His lordship over both the living and the dead.

Paul highlights the sovereignty of God over life and death. Our existence and the length of our lives are ultimately in God’s hands. He is the giver and sustainer of life, and He alone determines the appointed time for each person to pass from this life to the next. Living “unto the Lord” means that the believer’s life is derived from Him, lived by faith in Him, and directed to His honour and glory. Dying “unto the Lord” means resigning one’s life to Him at His pleasure, and in death magnifying Him, with the hope of being raised by Him to live with Him forever.

The phrase “we are the Lord’s” emphasises the ownership and belongingness of believers to God. As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been bought with a price and belong to Him. Therefore, our lives should reflect this reality. We are called to live in a manner that aligns with God’s will, seeking to bring glory to His name and fulfill the purposes He has for us.

This verse also underscores the unity of believers. Regardless of differences in personal convictions or disputable matters, all Christians are united in their commitment to the Lord. The emphasis is on the common identity we share as followers of Jesus Christ, rather than allowing divisions and disagreements to hinder our fellowship and cooperation. Because believers belong to the Lord, they are not to be judged or despised by one another; they serve another Master, who is their Lord and Judge.

Application

Romans 14:8 encourages us to examine our lives and evaluate whether we are truly living for the Lord.
