Romans 2:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Romans 2:18 (KJV) says: "And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law."

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider its context within the book of Romans. In this letter, the Apostle Paul is writing to the church in Rome, addressing both Jews and Gentiles. He emphasises the need for righteousness, salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and the impartiality of God’s judgment.

Knowing God’s Will:In this verse, Paul is addressing the Jews, who had the privilege of possessing the Law of God. They were familiar with God’s revealed will through the Scriptures. The Jews had a deeper knowledge of God’s commands, moral principles, and expectations compared to the Gentiles who did not have the Law. This knowledge came through their religious upbringing and study of the Scriptures.

Approving the Things that are More Excellent:Paul acknowledges that the Jews not only possessed knowledge of God’s will but also approved of things that are more excellent. The Jews had a unique advantage in understanding God’s standards and His desires for righteousness. They recognised the superiority of God’s ways and His moral laws compared to other worldviews or philosophies of the time.

Instructed out of the Law:The Jews received instruction in the Law. They were taught and educated about the commandments, rituals, and regulations given by God in the Old Testament. The Law was intended to guide them in living a righteous life and to reveal their need for a Saviour.

Application for Today:While this verse specifically refers to the Jews in Paul’s time, there are relevant applications for Christians today. As believers, we have access to the entire Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. We are called to diligently study God’s Word, understand His will, and approve of things that are excellent. Our knowledge of God’s will should not be merely theoretical but should be accompanied by a genuine desire to live according to His standards.

Balancing Knowledge and Action:It’s important to note that knowledge alone is not enough. In the following verses (Romans 2:19-24), Paul admonishes the Jews for their hypocrisy, highlighting that they had the Law but failed to live up to it. True faith in God requires more than head knowledge; it demands a transformed heart that leads to obedience and righteous living.
