Romans 3:26

Listen to this article

“To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul to the Christians in Rome. In the preceding verses, Paul discusses the universal sinfulness of humanity and the need for righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:26 is part of Paul’s explanation of how God’s righteousness is revealed.

God’s Righteousness:The verse begins by declaring that God’s righteousness is made known “at this time.” It refers to the present era in which the good news of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed. God’s righteousness encompasses His holiness, justice, and faithfulness. It is His perfect standard of rightness.

Just and Justifier:The verse states that God is both “just” and “the justifier.” These two terms seem contradictory at first glance. On one hand, God is perfectly just, meaning He always acts in accordance with what is right and fair. He cannot overlook sin or compromise His justice.

The Problem of Sin:All humans have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Sin demands punishment because it violates God’s righteous standard. So the question arises: How can God, who is just, declare sinful people righteous without compromising His justice?

Jesus Christ:The answer lies in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus satisfied the demands of justice by taking the punishment for sin upon Himself. He lived a perfect life, fulfilling the requirements of the law, and became the perfect sacrifice for our sins. By believing in Jesus, we are justified, or declared righteous, in God’s sight.

Faith in Jesus:The verse concludes by stating that God is the justifier of “him which believeth in Jesus.” This emphasizes that faith in Jesus is the means by which we receive God’s righteousness. Our justification is not achieved through our own efforts or good works but through faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Application:Romans 3:26 highlights the amazing truth that God, in His justice and mercy, offers us the gift of righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. It reminds us that salvation is available to all who believe, regardless of their background or past sins. As believers, we can rest in the assurance that God’s justice has been satisfied through Christ, and we are declared righteous before Him.

  • In summary, Romans 3:26 emphasizes the righteousness of God and His ability to justify sinners through faith in Jesus Christ. It reveals God’s perfect justice and His loving provision for our salvation.
