Whom God hath set forth to bee a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousnesse for the remission of sinnes, that are past, through the forbearance of God. Romans 3:25 (KJV)

Context: Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome. In this particular section, Paul addresses the universal problem of sin and the need for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Propitiation: The word “propitiation” in this verse refers to Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross. He became the atoning sacrifice for our sins, satisfying the wrath of God and reconciling humanity to God. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus made it possible for us to be forgiven and to have a restored relationship with God.

Faith in His Blood: Salvation and forgiveness of sins are obtained through faith in Jesus’ shed blood. Blood represents the sacrificial nature of His death, as the shedding of blood was a crucial element in Old Testament sacrifices. By placing our faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death, we acknowledge His atoning work and trust in His redemption.

Declare His Righteousness: Through Jesus’ sacrifice, God declares His righteousness. The righteousness of God refers to His perfect moral and ethical standards. In justifying sinners through faith in Christ, God demonstrates His righteousness, upholds His standards, and yet shows mercy.

Remission of Sins: The purpose of Jesus’ propitiatory sacrifice is to provide forgiveness and remission of sins. “Remission” means forgiveness or cancellation. Through faith in Jesus, our sins are forgiven and removed from us as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). This forgiveness covers sins that are past.

Forbearance of God: The verse states that the forgiveness of sins is made possible through the forbearance of God. “Forbearance” refers to God’s patient and merciful withholding of punishment. Rather than immediately judging and condemning humanity, God showed patience and allowed time for His plan of salvation to unfold.

Key Themes: This verse highlights several important themes in Christian theology, including atonement, faith, righteousness, forgiveness, and the patience of God. It emphasizes the central role of Jesus’ sacrificial death in providing salvation and the need for faith in Him to receive forgiveness of sins.

Application: Romans 3:25 reminds us of the incredible love and grace of God in providing a way for our sins to be forgiven. It calls us to have faith in Jesus’ sacrificial work on the cross and to trust in His righteousness for our salvation. As recipients of God’s forgiveness, we are called to extend that forgiveness to others and to live lives that reflect His mercy and grace.
