“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

Context:Romans is an epistle written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular section, Paul is discussing the significance of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, highlighting the blessings and benefits that come through faith in Him.

“And not only so”:Paul is referring to the previous verses where he talks about the reconciliation and justification that comes through faith in Christ (Romans 5:8-10).

“But we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ”:Here, Paul emphasizes that believers not only experience reconciliation and justification, but they also have a reason to rejoice in God. Through Jesus Christ, they can find joy and delight in their relationship with God.

“By whom we have now received the atonement”:The phrase “received the atonement” can also be translated as “received reconciliation.” It signifies that through Jesus Christ, believers have received reconciliation with God. The atonement refers to the act of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, which provided forgiveness and reconciliation for humanity.

Key themes in Romans 5:11:

a. Rejoicing in God: Paul emphasizes that believers can experience genuine joy in their relationship with God. This joy stems from the reconciliation and justification they have received through Jesus Christ.

b. Relationship with Jesus Christ: The source of believers’ joy is through their Lord, Jesus Christ. He is the mediator who brings them into a right relationship with God.

c. Atonement: The atonement is a central aspect of Christian theology, referring to Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross to pay for the sins of humanity. Through this atoning sacrifice, believers receive reconciliation with God.

  • Rejoice in your relationship with God:As a believer, you can find joy in your restored relationship with God. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude and express your joy through praise, thanksgiving, and worship.
  • Focus on Jesus Christ:Recognize Jesus Christ as the source of your joy and the mediator of your relationship with God. Seek to deepen your understanding of His sacrificial death and resurrection, which made reconciliation possible.
  • Reflect on the atonement:Take time to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ atoning sacrifice for your life. Recognize the forgiveness and reconciliation you have received through His death. This reflection can foster a deeper appreciation for God’s grace and love.
  • Share your joy:As you experience joy in your relationship with God, share that joy with others. Your transformed life can serve as a testimony to others, inviting them to experience the same joy through faith in Jesus Christ.
