Romans 5:12

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 5:12 (KJV)

The connecting word “Wherefore” links this verse to Paul’s preceding argument in Romans 5 about justification by faith and the grace of God. Having described the blessings of being justified, Paul now explains the origin of humanity’s condition that made justification necessary.

Paul states that sin entered the world through one man, Adam, referring to the account in Genesis 3 when Adam disobeyed God’s command. Death came as a direct consequence of sin, bringing both physical mortality and spiritual separation from God. Paul emphasizes that death passed upon all men because all have sinned. This means every individual has sinned personally, and Adam’s act also affected all humanity, as the following verses present Christ as the second Adam.

This verse is foundational for understanding the doctrine of original sin and the need for salvation. Paul’s argument sets up the contrast with Christ’s work of redemption, showing that as sin and death entered through one man, grace and life come through Jesus Christ. The connection to Genesis 3 is direct and essential for understanding the historical basis of Paul’s argument.

Because all have sinned and are subject to the consequences of sin, there is a universal need for redemption and reconciliation with God. The good news is that through Jesus Christ, forgiveness and eternal life are made available to all who believe in Him. This verse highlights the seriousness of sin and the desperate need for salvation, urging readers to recognize their sinful condition and accept the redemption provided by Christ.

Romans 5:12 teaches us about the origin of sin, its consequences, and the universal need for salvation. It underscores the reality that sin separates humanity from God, but it also points to the hope found in Jesus Christ, who offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who trust in Him.
