Romans 6:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:11, KJV)

Context:It’s important to understand the context of the verse to grasp its full meaning. In the preceding verses (Romans 6:1-10), the apostle Paul explains how believers have died to sin and been raised to new life in Christ through baptism. He emphasizes that we should not continue to live in sin but rather consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God.

Reckoning ourselves dead to sin:The verse begins with the phrase “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin.” To reckon means to consider or account something as true. As believers, we are called to view ourselves as dead to sin. This means recognizing that our old sinful nature has been crucified with Christ, and we are no longer slaves to sin.

Alive unto God through Jesus Christ:The verse continues, “but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” By considering ourselves dead to sin, we can fully embrace the new life we have in Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has given us the opportunity to have a restored relationship with God. We are now alive to God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and able to live a life that honours Him.

Understanding the implications:This verse carries significant implications for our daily lives as believers. It reminds us that our identity has been radically transformed through our union with Christ. We are no longer defined by our past sins and failures but by our new life in Him. Therefore, we should strive to live in a manner consistent with our new identity, aligning our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with the truth of being alive to God.

Practical application:To apply this verse in our lives, we should:

  • Continually renew our minds with the truth of God’s Word, reminding ourselves of our new identity in Christ.
  • Reject the power of sin and temptation, realizing that we are no longer slaves to its control.
  • Seek to live in obedience to God, relying on His grace and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Cultivate a deeper relationship with God through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.
