Romans 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

1. Context: To understand the verse better, it’s essential to consider the surrounding verses and the overall message of the book of Romans. In Romans 6, the apostle Paul addresses the issue of sin and its implications for believers in Christ. He emphasizes the transformative power of the gospel and how it leads to a new way of living.

2. Sin’s Reign and Mortal Bodies: Paul begins verse 12 by cautioning believers against allowing sin to reign in their mortal bodies. Sin, in this context, refers to the power and influence sin can have over a person’s life. The phrase “mortal body” refers to our physical bodies, which are susceptible to sin and its desires.

3. Obedience to Sin: Paul warns that if we allow sin to reign in our mortal bodies, we become more likely to obey its lustful desires. Sin’s nature is to entice and lead us astray from God’s perfect will. When we give in to these lusts, we fail to live in alignment with God’s righteousness.

4. The Call to Resist: By saying, “Let not sin therefore reign,” Paul is urging believers to take an active role in resisting sin’s dominion. As Christians, we are called to live according to God’s standards, empowered by the Holy Spirit. We have the ability, through Christ, to overcome sin and not be controlled by its desires.

5. Practical Application: This verse provides a practical instruction for believers. We should be vigilant in guarding our hearts and minds against the temptations of sin. It involves actively choosing to reject sin’s control and instead submit to the authority of Christ. This requires cultivating a daily relationship with God, studying His Word, and relying on the Holy Spirit’s strength to resist sin.

6. The Freedom in Christ: Understanding and applying the truths in Romans 6:12 brings freedom and transformation. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, believers have been set free from the power of sin. We have the opportunity to live in obedience to God, guided by His Spirit, and experience the abundant life He has planned for us.
