Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:4 (KJV)
Context
The apostle Paul writes to believers in Rome, explaining the profound change that union with Christ brings. In the preceding verse, he teaches that all who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death (Romans 6:3). The word “therefore” in Romans 6:4 builds on that truth, showing that baptism is not merely a ritual but a participation in Christ’s death and burial.
Meaning
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death.” Baptism, especially by immersion, pictures burial. When a believer goes under the water, it is like being placed in the grave with Christ. This act identifies the believer with Jesus’ death, putting the old self—the life dominated by sin—to death. It is a visible sign of a spiritual reality: the believer is united with Christ in His redemptive work.
“That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father.” The glory of the Father is His divine power, the same power that raised Jesus from the grave. That resurrection power is not distant or past; it is available to every believer through union with Christ. The same life-giving force that conquered death now works in those who belong to Him.
“Even so we also should walk in newness of life.” The purpose of this identification is ethical and practical. “Walk” in Scripture often describes daily conduct. Newness of life means a transformed existence, no longer enslaved to sin but alive to God. It is a qualitative change—a new creation empowered by the Spirit—not merely moral improvement. Believers are called to reflect the nature and character of Christ in thought, word, and deed.
Application
Romans 6:4 calls every follower of Christ to embrace their new identity. Baptism is a public declaration of this spiritual reality, but the daily walk is where it is lived out. Because believers are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, they are empowered to live righteously and holy. This verse does not teach that baptism saves, but that it signifies and seals the believer’s union with Christ. The power to live a holy life comes from that union, not from human effort alone.
Reflection
Consider what it means to walk in newness of life today. The old self has been buried with Christ; the new life is raised by the Father’s glory. Let that reality shape your conduct, as you live each day in the power of His resurrection.
