Romans 8:32

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:32 (KJV)

Romans 8:32 is the climax of Paul’s argument in Romans 8:31-39 about the believer’s security in God’s love. The verse presents a “from the greater to the lesser” argument: if God did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, He will certainly also freely give us all things with Him.

“He that spared not his own Son” means God did not withhold or hold back His Son. This is set against the background of God’s judgment: He did not spare the angels that sinned, the old world, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Egyptians and their firstborn, or even Israel when they transgressed. But in the case of His own Son—His proper Son, of the same nature and equal to Him—He did not spare Him. Instead, He delivered Him up for us all.

“Delivered him up for us all” points to the cross, where Jesus was handed over to death for our sake. This act demonstrates the depth of God’s love and His willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to reconcile us to Himself.

“How shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” assures believers of God’s provision. If God was willing to give His Son, the most precious and valuable gift, to secure our salvation, then it follows that He will also graciously provide all that we need. “All things” refers to everything needed for life and godliness, and the gift is “freely” given, meaning it is gracious and without cost to us.

This verse is a strong assurance that God’s grace is not stingy but generous, and that believers can trust God to provide for all their needs. The immediate context (Romans 8:31-39) emphasizes that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:32 emphasizes the boundless love of God and His willingness to sacrifice for our salvation. It assures believers that if God has already given us the greatest gift, His Son, then we can trust Him to provide everything else we need. This verse encourages us to have faith in God’s provision and to rely on His unfailing love in every aspect of our lives.
