Ruth 1:16

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

Ruth 1:16 (KJV)

The book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman who showed exceptional loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi, during a time of great hardship. After the deaths of their husbands, Naomi decides to return to her homeland, Bethlehem, and Ruth insists on going with her. Ruth’s choice is not easy. She must leave her own country, her family, and everything familiar.

Ruth’s words are a solemn, personal pledge. She refuses to leave Naomi, promising to go wherever Naomi goes and to lodge wherever Naomi lodges. Her declaration is not merely emotional attachment; it is a radical, sacrificial commitment that involves leaving her homeland, her family, and her gods. By saying “thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God,” Ruth makes a personal profession of faith in the God of Israel. She turns away from the gods of Moab and embraces a new identity and a new faith. This is a conversion, not just a promise of companionship. Ruth binds herself to Naomi and to Naomi’s God, regardless of the cost.

Ruth’s covenant loyalty becomes foundational to the rest of the book. Through her commitment and faith, she becomes an ancestor of King David and, in the New Testament, of Jesus Christ. This highlights God’s faithfulness to those who trust in Him and walk in obedience to His ways. Her act of faith is a model of covenant faithfulness, where one person binds themselves to another and to their God.

Ruth’s example encourages us to stand by our loved ones and support them faithfully, especially in difficult times. Her conversion demonstrates the power of a personal decision to follow God. We can make the same choice to embrace a relationship with Him. Ruth’s story reminds us that God can use our acts of sacrificial love and faithfulness to bring about His purposes in our lives and the lives of others. Her loyalty was not based on what she would gain, but on her love for Naomi and her new faith.

Ruth’s words challenge us to examine the depth of our own commitments. Are we willing to leave behind what is familiar for the sake of love and faith? Her pledge shows that true devotion often requires sacrifice, but it also opens the door to God’s blessing. God calls His people to wholehearted devotion, and Ruth’s example shows what that can look like in daily life.

  • Loyalty and commitment are vital in our relationships, particularly in difficult times.

  • Ruth’s conversion shows that a personal decision to follow God can change the course of a life.

  • God can use our acts of sacrificial love to bring about His purposes.
