Ruth 1:9
The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
Ruth 1:9 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in the opening chapter of the book of Ruth. Naomi has lost her husband and both sons while living in Moab. When she hears that the Lord has given food to His people in Judah, she decides to return to Bethlehem. Her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, start the journey with her. On the way, Naomi urges them to go back to their own mothers’ homes, and she speaks this blessing over them.
Meaning
Naomi prays that the Lord will grant each young woman rest in the house of a new husband. The word “rest” here means more than physical ease. It points to security, safety, and a settled place of belonging. In ancient Israel, marriage provided a woman with protection and a home. Naomi’s blessing shows her deep care for Ruth and Orpah. She wants them to have a future marked by peace and stability, not continued hardship.
Her words also show that rest is a gift from God. It is not something people can create by their own effort. Naomi asks the Lord to give this rest, because she knows that He is the one who provides for His people. Her prayer is a model of trusting God with the lives of those we love. Even in her own grief, she does not forget their needs. She speaks hope over them, asking God to act on their behalf.
Biblical connections
The theme of rest runs through Scripture. In Psalm 116:7, the psalmist tells his soul to return to its rest because the Lord has dealt bountifully with him. That rest is also a gift from God, rooted in His faithful care. In the New Testament, Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28-29). Naomi’s prayer for her daughters-in-law points toward the deeper rest that God alone can give, and that believers find fully in Christ. This rest is not only for the future but also for the present, as God sustains His people through trials.
Application
This verse encourages us to pray for God’s rest for our loved ones, especially during times of change and loss. Like Naomi, we can bless others and commit them to the Lord’s care, even when we cannot control their circumstances. We can ask God to give them security, peace, and a place of belonging. We can also examine our own hearts and ask whether we are seeking rest in God or trying to build it through our own efforts. When we face transitions, we can remember that God is the source of true rest. We can intercede for those who are grieving, trusting that God hears our prayers.
Reflection
Naomi’s blessing was spoken in a moment of deep sorrow, yet it was full of hope. She did not cling to her daughters-in-law out of fear, but released them into God’s hands. Her example challenges us to trust God with the people we love and to believe that He desires their good. The rest we need most is found in Him, and He is faithful to provide it. In our own moments of parting or loss, we can follow Naomi’s example by speaking words of blessing and entrusting others to God’s care.
