Ruth 2:2
And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
Ruth 2:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ruth is a narrative in the Old Testament. It tells how Ruth, a Moabite woman, showed loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi after both had lost their husbands. They returned to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest (Ruth 1:22). Ruth was a foreigner and a widow, so she had no land or income. In this setting, she took the initiative to provide for herself and Naomi. Her request to go and glean shows her practical care and her respect for Naomi’s authority.
Meaning
Ruth asked Naomi for permission to go to the fields and glean ears of corn, that is, grain. Gleaning was the practice of gathering leftover grain after the harvesters had finished. The law of Moses allowed the poor and foreigners to glean, as stated in Leviticus 19:9-10 and Deuteronomy 24:19-22. Ruth’s request to find grace in someone’s sight shows her humble dependence on the kindness of a landowner. She did not demand help; she asked for favor. Naomi’s reply, “Go, my daughter,” was warm and affectionate, showing their close bond. Ruth’s words also reveal her awareness of her vulnerable position as a foreigner and widow, yet she did not let fear stop her from acting.
Biblical connections
Ruth’s initiative and humility are examples of faithful living. She trusted God’s provision through ordinary work. The narrative later shows that God guided her to the field of Boaz, a near kinsman. Boaz became her husband, and she became an ancestor of King David and ultimately of Jesus Christ. This connection shows how God works through small, faithful acts to accomplish His larger purposes. Her trust in God’s providential care is implicit in her seeking grace from others.
Application
Ruth’s example encourages believers to take responsibility and work diligently, even in difficult circumstances. She did not wait passively; she acted with courage and respect. Her willingness to glean, a lowly task, teaches humility. Believers can trust that God sees their efforts and guides their steps, even when they do not know the outcome. Acts of kindness and generosity, like allowing gleaning, can have lasting impact on others. Ruth’s story also reminds us that God often provides through the kindness of people, not just through direct miracles.
Reflection
Ruth’s words reveal a heart that seeks grace. She recognized her need and placed herself at the mercy of another. This attitude mirrors the believer’s dependence on God’s grace. In daily life, Christians can follow Ruth by taking initiative, showing loyalty, and trusting that God’s providence works through ordinary faithfulness. Her story reminds us that no act of humble service is wasted in God’s plan.
