Ruth 2:8

Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:

Ruth 2:8 (KJV)

The book of Ruth is set during the time of the judges in Israel, a period marked by moral and spiritual decline. Ruth, a Moabite woman, became a widow after her husband died, and she chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, instead of returning to her own people. Her loyalty and faithfulness led her to glean in the fields to provide for their needs. By divine providence, she came to the field of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi.

In Ruth 2:8, Boaz addresses Ruth directly, calling her “my daughter,” an expression of fatherly affection and concern. The phrase “Hearest thou not?” is not a question about what a servant had said, but an earnest call for Ruth to pay attention to what Boaz is about to say. Some renderings understand it as a polite entreaty: “Hear, I pray thee, my daughter.” Boaz instructs Ruth not to glean in another field but to stay in his field and remain close to his female workers. This guidance ensured Ruth’s safety and allowed her to benefit from the abundance of Boaz’s field. His words combine protection, provision, and direction.

Boaz’s care for Ruth goes beyond what the law required. He does not merely permit her to glean; he directs her to a specific place of safety. The instruction to “abide here fast by my maidens” places Ruth under the protection of Boaz’s household. This kindness foreshadows Boaz’s role as a kinsman-redeemer, a relative who could rescue and provide for Naomi’s family. In a deeper way, it points to the greater redemption accomplished by Christ, who welcomes the outcast and provides for all who come to Him.

Ruth’s encounter with Boaz reveals God’s provision in times of need. Ruth’s faithfulness and hard work led her to the right place, where she found favour and blessing. God orchestrates events and guides our steps, often using people as instruments of His provision. Boaz’s instruction for Ruth to stay in his field can be seen as an example of God’s guidance in our lives. Just as Boaz directed Ruth, God provides direction and wisdom for us. When we seek His guidance and follow His leading, He will lead us to the right places and opportunities.

Boaz’s compassionate treatment of Ruth reminds us of God’s kindness towards His children. His concern for Ruth’s well-being shows how God cares for us and watches over us, often using others to bless and help us in our journey. The story of Ruth encourages us to trust in God’s provision even in difficult circumstances. Just as Ruth remained faithful and diligent, we should continue to seek God’s guidance, trusting that He will provide for our needs.

Boaz’s kindness and compassion towards Ruth serve as a reminder for us to extend the same to others. We should be attentive to the needs of those around us, offering help and support when possible. Ruth’s obedience to Boaz’s instruction is an example for us to follow God’s guidance. As we seek His will through prayer and study of His Word, let us be willing to act in obedience, trusting that He knows what is best for us.

Ruth 2:8 demonstrates Boaz’s kindness, guidance, and provision in Ruth’s life. It also teaches us to trust in God’s provision, display kindness and compassion, and follow God’s guidance in our own lives. The security Ruth found in staying within Boaz’s field reminds us of the safety found in remaining within the place of God’s provision. Rather than wandering in search of better opportunities, we are called to remain faithful where God has placed us, trusting that He will care for us.
