Ruth 3:1
Then Naomi her mother in law said vnto her, My daughter, shal I not seeke rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? Ruth 3:1 (KJV)
The book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Old Testament. It tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who becomes part of the lineage of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ. In Ruth 3:1 we find a conversation between Naomi, Ruth’s mother‑in‑law, and Ruth herself. After experiencing loss and hardship, Naomi wants to secure a future of rest and well‑being for her daughter‑in‑law, Ruth. Earlier chapters reveal that Ruth’s husband, Naomi’s son, has died, leaving both women in difficult circumstances. Naomi recognises the need for Ruth to find stability and security in her life. The phrase “seek rest” in this verse indicates Naomi’s desire to find a place of security, both in terms of physical provision and a suitable husband. In ancient Israel it was customary for a widow to be cared for by her deceased husband’s family or to marry within that family. Although not explicitly mentioned in this verse, we see God’s hand at work throughout the book of Ruth. Even in the midst of difficult circumstances, God provides for Ruth and Naomi. In subsequent chapters Boaz, a close relative of Naomi, becomes a kinsman‑redeemer for Ruth, offering her protection and support. Ruth’s story teaches important lessons about faithfulness, loyalty, and trusting in God’s provision. Ruth demonstrates unwavering loyalty to Naomi and shows great faith by following Naomi’s guidance. Likewise, Naomi’s concern for Ruth’s well‑being reflects the importance of caring for one another within the community of believers. As we study Ruth 3:1 we can consider how we can be a source of support and care for those around us, especially those who may be experiencing hardship. It is essential to be sensitive to the needs of others and seek ways to bring them comfort and security. Furthermore, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to provide for us and guide us in our own journeys.
